Artist statement
Clothes make people, they say. Some clothes take on the character of public statements. Others become icons of a time or culture. I am interested in how noteworthy clothes express values and attitudes and tell something about how we exist in the world.
My paintings reflect existence through well-known pictorial elements, which I interpret and sample in a story about life and common human conditions. My series Existence includes, among other things, Barbie's suit, Madonna's cone bra corset, Helle Thorning's red prom dress, Prince's shoes, Jackie Kennedy's pink walking suit with blood on the skirt. The clothes are painted as paper doll clothes, i.e. without the person who can lock down the interpretation. The viewer can "put on" the clothes themselves as a kind of disguise or statement for different situations in life. An invitation for reflection.
Previously, my focus was unseen urban landscapes and consumer products, which I made into still life paintings, as a different take on the genre. I have often found inspiration in ordinary everyday objects and situations. I'm interested in putting the spotlight on what we stop noticing.
In another series of works, exhibited at the Heerup Museum, I have been in dialogue with Heerup's works, and found inspiration in the museum's collection/archive and in themes such as cohesion and popular behaviour, as well as Heerup's life and motif universe, such as shoes, coffee, dresses, birds. My works play with the idea of 'getting to know each other', e.g. over a cup of coffee or over the clothesline. Do we still know what it means in today's Denmark? I have expressed this in painting, linoleum cuts, poems and installations.
For the solo exhibition Letter in April, I created a paraphrase of Inger Christensen's poem with the same title, as a total room installation. The space of the poem was recreated in an abstracted version, so that the viewer could "enter the poem". The works are my pictorial reflections on the poem, and express the poem's everyday situations, moods and repetitions. For the exhibition I also created the work it, a site-specific commission about Inger Christensen, symbolized by Snoopy at his typewriter and a pair of clogs. In my art, I use shoes as symbols of being who you are, just like she did.
I am a colorist and work in depth with my color attitude, look for new challenging compositions and only use the single color in one place in a painting to create dynamism.
I work in different media such as painting, drawing, collage, digital collages, text, textile and readymade sculptures.
