In the series "Ciggies", Jonna Pedersen examines through painting as media, cigarette packages from different cultures, from the last century to the present. The cigarette packages in this respect become storytellers who, with their geographically dispersed origins, tell us about world history and the values associated with the epochs of the era in which the cigarette package itself has "lived."
"Ciggies" is a form of common memory that at one time bears witness to the world's cultural diversity and its development. The works discuss the concept of hedonism, in relation to consumer society's products, and their eternal calling temptations for enjoyment.
Pedersen's artistic practice stems from an interest in expressing the close, overlooked and cultural changes that take place over time. With a special focus on familiar elements from our everyday life, she asks questions about their importance and how this significance is hanged and shaped by our common culture, historical and contemporarily.
