NEW PAINTINGS - CIGGIES

In the series “Ciggies” Jonna Pedersen is investigating cigarette packs from various cultures from the last century to now, and depicting the world history and the values throughout time.

Jonna Pedersen smoke her first half - and last - cigarette at the age of 14 and has never touched tobacco since then. From years of fascination and seduction of packaging of every day consumer products, her inspiration has led to a range of modern still life paintings telling a story and triggering memories.

Pedersen’s inspiration for the series of “Ciggies” was lit after a conversation with her dad about how he played with, collected and traded empty cigarette packs during his post Second World War childhood, and how he had a favorite cigarette brand that he started smoking at the age of 6.

Smokers or non-smokers - most people read the signs on everyday life products. Most people are also influenced by the image that the product is trying to create.
In this series, Pedersen is portraying our joint   memories, and she is asking the questions: What happened to our old values? How did our values change from hope, glory and peace? Which role has cigarettes played in our culture and for our individual identity? What is smoking about today… Maybe she is even creating the cigarettes’ tombstones…

INSPIRED BY 1959 - NEW SERIES OF COLLAGES - "WHAT YOU REALLY CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT"

"What You Really Can't Live Without - Item 3" - mixed media - 30x21 cm

The series “What You Really Can’t Live Without” is both a celebration of the world and the values that once were and an attempt to investigate consumerism. The series concentrate on Danish and American advertisements from the 50ties and 60ties where women were women and men were men. The constellation of ads from both countries both show the differences and the overlap of the two cultures. Whereas the POP art movement occurred in response to advertisements and consumerism, I extol the advertisements and I want to focus on What You Really Can’t Live Without.

INVESTIGATING THE DANISH FOOD CULTURE - NEW SERIES OF PAINTINGS - "BURNING LOVE"

"Danish Meat Balls" - acrylic on canvas - 134x170 cm

"A Classic Open Sandwich" - acrylic on canvas - 60x80 cm

Some years back my experience with Stuart Davis' "Odol" painting at MOMA in New York and the experience of some of the Funen painters Still Life got me started on a new painting process, and my interpretations of the concept Still Life began with the iconic packaging. I made a large series of packaging still life over the years.

As a natural continuation, I have taken the food out of the packaging. In the series 'Burning Love' I examine the theme of the Danish food culture, and in the study lies a wonder and fascination of Danish food traditions and rituals. See works here...

GROUP SHOW IN NEW YORK - "ARE WE ALREADY GONE?"

ARE WE ALREADY GONE?
Artists on the Art of Leaving
Curated by Negin Sharifzadeh
On view September 21st - September 28th 2014

Animation and technology studio FlickerLab is leaving their studios in SoHo and headed to Dumbo, Brooklyn. In celebration of this transformation and farewell, FlickerLab is sponsoring the exhibition Are We Already Gone? Artists on the Art of Leaving, a Time-Mark after their 15 years in Manhattan.

Curator Negin Sharifzadeh has invited me to join this show, together with more than 30 artists from around the world, most displaced in one way or another from their point of origin, exploring the transformations they have experienced from this displacement and all of life’s other dislocations.

She says, "There is an ambiguity and a sense of the unknown in the act of leaving. To leave is to forever transform the thing that is left, and to enter into metamorphosis oneself, by growth, change of location, status, identity, or death."

Ahmed Issawi, Director of Alwan for the Arts, says, “In so far as art should reflect its environment or contend with the problematics of representation, Are We Already Gone, curated by Negin Sharifzadeh, a variable composition of installations, sculptures, and conceptual visual and sound pieces, is emblematic of a world of impermanence, of wondering whether one has wandered away or is still here. Not merely are the works themselves concerned with incompletion, sculptural or architectural suspension, identity not as a notion bequeathed through birth rather as a transformative ongoing process of migration and exile, but more so in where the "art" is displayed: in closets, on kitchen counters, workplace, home, if we know what home is anymore."

I am showing the painting "Going For A Ride, New York".
The painting depicts a MetroCard vending machine from New York's subway and is for me a symbol of the small and large journeys we as people do in everyday life and in life, which often include a "goodbye" or "see you later".

ARTIST TALK @ HEERUP MUSEUM - "MY PLACE"

GROUP SHOW HEERUP MUSEUM - "MY PLACE"

7 February - 27 July 2014 - opening 6 February at 5 pm

Heerup Museum, Kirkesvinget 1, 2610 Rødovre.

Henry Heerup was a renowed Danish visual artist (1907-1993) who was a member of COBRA.

In Roedovre where I live Henry Heerup has his own museum.
Last night a new exhibition opened, called "My Place" and this exhibition is about the different places in Roedovre where Heerup and other artists found inspiration.

I participate with one of my paintings from Roedovre - a painting which has been part of a public collection for many years - so it was not until recently that I was made aware that my piece would be part of this show.

Director of Heerup Museum Anni Lave introduces the mayor of Rødovre Erik Nielsen.

In 2014 I have been invited to be in the jury panel together with Trine Rytter Andersen, Frodo Mikkelsen, Simon Grimm, and Jacob Vengberg Sevel.

I am very happy and honored to have been invited to be part of the jury panel at Nordkraftudstillingen 2014. Quality in art means a lot to me as art has a big influence on us in many ways. Therefore, I have accepted to be a jury. I think it is important to focus on artists who have quality and talent in their work.

SOLOSHOW GALLERI HEGNHØJ & BLYME - COPENHAGEN

"Eyecatcher” – soloshow @ Hegnhøj & Blyme

From 4-30 October I show a selection of new works at the beautiful Gallery Hegnhøj & Blyme in the centre of Copenhagen.

The exhibition includes works where Jonna Pedersen has been inspired by locations in New York and London, where people have left their imprint. In the works she has worked with encapsulating moments from specific streets and areas such as Redchurch Street in London and Union Square Greenmarket in New York. She has created her own time gaps and retain traces of the people who spend their days in these locations.

Besides the city, she finds her inspiration in supermarkets around the world. She has an intense fascination for packaging and their stories as she transforms into modern still life.

Opening 4 October 5-9 pm.

FORMER DANISH PRIME MINISTER + BAM & CO

Currently several of my paintings decorate the new HEADSPACE center in Copenhagen. One of the initiators of this center for young people is the Former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.

I met the Former Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen at the opening and had the pleasure of giving him the tour of the center, showing him where we had placed my art work.

Poul Nyrup Rasmussen was extremely excited about my art.

SOLO SHOW IN GX GALLERY, LONDON

Jonna Pedersen
FOOTACTION

Danish Contemporary Painter ‘Jonna Pedersen’ opens exhibition in Camberwell @ GX Gallery.

The artist will be at the opening reception on Friday 17th of August at GX Gallery, 43 Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8RS from 7:30pm-9:30pm.

As one of the most important artists working in Denmark today we are proud to invite you to join us at this exciting event of Jonna Pedersen's first exhibition with us. Her works demonstrate a fascination with architecture and urban streets showing a contemporary and vibrant take of some of our local London areas. Works have arrived at the gallery and are available for pre-previewing now! We look forward to seeing many of you at the opening if not before.

Jonna Pedersen (http://www.gxgallery.com/artist/jonna-pedersen/) was born in 1971 in Odense, Denmark. She is a 2003 graduate of Bjorn Ignatius Ockenholt’s School of Visual Arts, Copenhagen and has also trained at Ealing College Art College, London with artist Hakan Nystrom. Later this year Jonna’s artwork will be in an exhibition at the Danish Museum of Art. Her artwork is exhibited regularly throughout Denmark, New York and Spain.
Approximately 25 works will be on display in this exhibition. This is her first exhibition in London following an introduction earlier in 2012 at the Affordable Art Fair.

As an artist Jonna produces series of works based on her visits or observations. In this show we focus on London, New York and Berlin. It’s her stripped bare stylistic interpretation of the intersection of lines, grids and colours in an urban landscape coupled with her use of flat tempera like brushwork and blocks of colour that so successfully engage the viewer it what at first appears to be a deathly flat, hollow, depiction of the common vernacular. As Ed McCormack says ‘Not many artists, after all, can present one with a bland stucco structure called ‘Gastronomia Italiana’ in what appears to be Danish strip mall, and make something about its deadpan eeriness evoke the night the notorious renegade Mafioso Crazy Joe Gallo went into a place called Umberto’s Clam House, in New York’s Little Italy, and ended up face-down in his calamari...’

An iconographic ‘realism’ characterizes Jonna Pedersens paintings of consumer products and gritty urbanisations. The ideals and tools of the Pop and Serial artists are strong influences on her style and used to gain control in her deconstruction of a scene as in cityscapes which often feature familiar street graffiti, subway signs and iconic buildings; or in her still life studies based on her fascination with everyday modern marketing and packaging.

The exhibition runs from August 18th through 30th 2012 at GX Gallery. It is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 9:30am-6:00pm.

BEACH PACKAGING DESIGN IN NEW YORK BLOGS ABOUT MY ART

The newyorker packaging company Beach Packaging Design writes on their blog:

Jonna Perdersen(whose sculptures we looked at yesterday) entitled the painting above “This Is a Pipe.” Making clever use of a brand of licorice pipes that I was not aware of —“Skippers Pipes”—and making reference to that popular paradox of representational art: The Treachery of Images by René Magritte. In Magritte’s painting a pipe appears above a caption that declares in French, “This is not a pipe”…

The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture “This is a pipe,” I’d have been lying!

In Pedersen’s painting, Magritte’s paradox is given an additional twist, since the product portrayed is, itself, a faux pipe. [Full disclosure: when I was in art school, I combined a 6 inch lenngth of galvanized heating pipe with an elbow joint (forming a pipe-like shape) and gave it the old “Ceci n’est pas une pipe inscription.]

NEW YORK CITY BLUES - KUNSTPAKHUSET IKAST & AUGUSTIANA

In the exhibition NEW YORK CITY BLUES the New York artist Grace Graupe Pillard and Robin Tewes and the Danish artists Jonna Pedersen and Bjørn Eriksen bring us quietly and insistently into the large painting called New York. In their work they come visually and mentally under the skin of NYC. There is the city, and the people who populate it. The artists depict NYC through these two lenses and each adds a tone to the great blues of the great city.

GLOBAL VILLAGE - INTERNATIONAL GROUP SHOW IN HOLLAND  - January 2012

From 3 February, I participate with three works in the international group exhibition Global Village 2012 in Alkmaar, Holland. I will be present for the opening.
60 artists from around the world exhibit on the theme of globalization.

Global Village 2012 first show in Holland, then in France and finally come to Copenhagen, Denmark in August:

 * Project 072, Alkmaar, Holland, 3rd February - 11 March 2012
 * The Château de Sully, Burgundy France, 7 - 15 July 2012
 * Cultural Well, Brondby Strand Denmark, 10 August - 15 September 2012

For some years I have investigated consumer products as images of our time that tell a story about our culture.

The recognizable objects from our common heritage interest me. The graphic images and the many references of cultural, social and geographical characteristics play a role in my interpretation of the product.

For Global Village 2012 I have investigated a global product, the beloved Nutella and created a work that binds us all together in this global village that we call the world.

 "Nuts About Nutella"
 200x222 cm

Additionally I have studied consumer products in 10xtheir size in the shape of 3D objects / carton sculpture. By using the collage and mixed media I have interpreted the famous Maggi cube and a margarine package.

“Magic Maggi”
60x60x26 cm

“My Margarine”
104 x 82 x 41 cm

THE JEALOUS CURATOR IS JEALOUS - april 2011

The Canadian blogger TheJealousCurator is jealous of my art:

Never in my life have I been more in the mood for coffee, fajitas, and marshmallows than I am at this very moment. Ok, normally I wouldn't think that combo was a very good idea, but Danish artist Jonna Pedersen has me convinced otherwise. Fantastic color choices, and beautifully boring subject matter. Now that's the kind of combo I really love!

BROOKLYN BLOGGER HAS ARTIST CRUSH ON MY PAINTINGS- april 2011

Art consultant and blogger Kate Singleton from Brooklyn i New York has written about my paintings on her blog:

Sometimes the best things in life find their way to you- such is the case with today’s crush, Danish artist Jonna Pedersen.

Pedersen is based in Copenhagen and paints both pop-art-y still-lifes and cityscapes of Copenhagen, Berlin and New York. I think she is one of the most talented artists I’ve come across; her work is aesthetic, modern yet timeless and full of poignant observation.

As my husband observed, her work is part Edward Hopper and part Andy Warhol.

REVIEW BY NEW YORK ART CRITIC & CURATOR DAVID GIBSON - marts 2011

at New York Art Marathon Blog

Jonna Pedersen “Fun Pops On a Stick”, 2010, acrylic on canvas, 9.4 x 11.8 in.

This work by Jonna Pedersen is called “Fun Pops On a Stick”. You might think that the artist is interested in pure products of pop life and commercial culture, but in fact, it looks like she is most attracted to the way that the words compose themselves in mundane situations. Some things in this piece are very obvious, an obvious metaphor, in this case its a fun pop. But other words seem to be coming out of it: ok, calmi, salmi. That looks like a brand name but it also infers to the roots of words calm, soul, love.

Jonna Pedersen “Licoriciii”, 2010, acrylic on canvas, 9.4 x 11.8 in.

Another piece is called “Licoriciii”. We have a package that looks like a checkerboard, it is a very simple cube shape and seems to be a carton of candies. And its simplicity has a drowsy visual quality, the checkered pattern hypnotizes you and makes you want to open that box and take a candy.

Jonna Pedersen “Portrait of a Caramel”, 2010, Acrylic on canvas, 31.5 x 39.4 in.

One more work is called “Portrait of a Caramel”. Chocolate coated toffee lollipops. The artist is obviously compelled by candy, sweetness, innocence, and yet commercial packaging, intentionality. These are all very minute but visually stunning images with metaphors of nationalism, stars on a blue background, red and white colors. These colors come out of heraldry, they entertain and confuse us, they also make us want to buy this pack of caramel.
